Acupuncture & Pregnancy & Induction

Pregnant AcupunctureOne of the more painful (no pun intended!) decisions pregnant woman have to make is whether they should be medically induced when past their due date. Even with all the facts laid out about how safe medical induction is, women want to try the most natural and safe way to labour.

This is where Acupuncture can help. It is one of the most efficient and natural ways to induce labour.  Why?? Acupuncture uses the body’s own resources to make it work more efficiently. It signals the baby to start its path down the birth canal. Acupuncture points send signals to the body to start producing the hormones necessary for induction. The stimulatory effect starts getting the mother’s body ready for the final step in this wondrous journey. The cervix starts dilating slowly so that the mother’s body is strong enough to help baby push its way through.

Acupuncture is not invasive. The points used for induction generally lie on the lower legs, arms, shoulders and lower back. The patient is lying sideways comfortably or sitting in a chair for about 20 to 30 mins. The needles are not hollow, they do not target any veins or nerves and they are not meant to cause any ill-effects or pain.
